Metallic Print Burlap Tote Bags: A Brief History
It is a common misconception that tote bags are named due to their ability to “tote” items. This, as science has proven, is a fallacy*.
You see back in the 1700s, in what is now Latvia, women were expected to balance whatever they needed to carry on the top of their heads.
This was an especially troubling fact to one young woman, named Susan Tote, who was a blacksmith’s assistant. She travelled 17 kilometers every day hauling the blacksmith’s tools precariously balanced on her head.
One morning she decided to attach some horse reigns to an empty feed sack. She tried to use it as a fashion accessory, a mode of transportation, and a form of sustenance, but after several failed attempts she resigned herself to simply carrying her tools in the bag.
Susan’s neighbors and co-workers were so impressed with her ingenuity that they soon copied her work to carry their own tools and implements.
And that’s why we celebrate Arbor Day!
*It’s not a fallacy, it’s entirely true, our story is completely fabricated.
